New Facebook feature raises more privacy concerns

Based on comments on news sites and Facebook's official blog, many users appear apprehensive about Facebook Places, the social-networking site's new location feature. It's not clear whether users' unfavorable reactions stem from privacy concerns or just confusion about the site's Places feature, which allows users to "check in" at restaurants, bars and other gathering spots. But it may be a good thing for Facebook that the site has no "dislike" button.

Facebook users are being targeted in a scam that offers them a chance to install a "dislike" button. The scam tricks users into allowing a rogue application to access their profile page, which then posts spam messages. It also attempts to lure people into completing an online survey, for which the scammers are paid money.

A claim to have solved one of the most difficult riddles in mathematics has been challenged by scientists. Vinay Deolalikar, a mathematician based at Hewlett-Packard laboratories in California, US, claims to have solved the problem of P vs NP. This has been described as the biggest problem in computer science; it is one of seven Millennium Prize Problems set out by the Clay Mathematics Institute.

The sound of the 'Google Alarm' is hard to miss. Web users who install this browser plug-in hear a loud, buzzing noise whenever they visit a website that relays information to Google.
It might seem intuitive that Google tracks the Web activity of users who search for things at Google.com. But what's less obvious is that unassuming Web users might have their browsing behavior tracked on other sites, too.

 
Google signals the end for Wave

Google is waving goodbye to Wave, a product which the company said would transform the way people communicate online. It blamed poor take-up by users of the service, which was launched to great fanfare just one year ago. At the time Google described the tool as "how e-mail would look if it were invented today".
