Asamoh Gyan Renders a Qualified Apology
Friday, 20 November 2009

Ghanaian international striker Asamoah Gyan has apologized for going AWOL before the Black Stars emplaned to Angola to engage the Palancas Negras in a friendly encounter which ended goalless in Luanda. Asamoah together with two others, Michael Essien and Sully Muntari refused to travel with the team on Monday to Angola and interestingly head Coach Milovan Rajevac was not informed as to the reasons behind their behavoiour.

The issue incensed the Ghana football Association who sent out a release on the matter and immediately began to launch an investigation into why the players stayed away without permission from the coach. In an interview with peace fm, Asamoah Gyan was sorry about the situation which has raised a lot of eyebrows in the country with public opinion sharply divided on whether such players should be banned for their recalcitrant behaviour.

However, Asamoah who plies his trade with French league 1 side Stade’ Renne qualified his apology by explaining why he had to boycott the Angola friendly and leave for France at all cost. He said, “My club demanded my services from the FA and that was contained in a series of faxes sent to the GFA and I was under excessive pressure to leave but its unfortunate I did not inform the coach about it”. “I want the coach and all Ghanaians to forgive me” he added.

Meanwhile Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari have yet to comment on the issue which has generated heated debated in the country.
